Artist Statement

A celebration of man, nature and transformation, TransLake references the successful reclamation project behind the creation of Lafarge Lake, the man-made lake at the heart of Coquitlam’s picturesque Town Center Park.

Once the site of a gravel pit owned by the LaFarge company, the land was donated to the City in the 1980s and developed into a hundred acres of public parkland that is now home to many wildlife species.

To mark Lafarge Lake’s industrial beginnings, a frog made of concrete surfaces to reflect an emerging torrent of green spaces being integrated into urban centers. Inspired by the Japanese word “Kaeru,” the sculpture encourages return -- not only of visitors and wildlife to parkland, but also the return of resource lands to green space after industry.
